Steps to take when struggling in a class
  1. Email your teacher to discuss specific concerns or struggles you are experiencing in the class and ask for help.
  2. Request and attend a Tutorial Period with your teacher to get extra help. This can be done on a regular basis or as needed. This is the Tutorial Schedule: COMING SOON
  3. The district has provided Tutor.com, which can be accessed with the instructions here through ARMS.
  4. Schedule a Student/Teacher/Parent Zoom Conference to discuss strategies that will help you improve your grade. Invite your School Counselor.
  5.  If the above steps have NOT been successful, contact your School Counselor to discuss other options and possibly initiate an IST Meeting with the Coordinator and teachers.

Grading Periods

Students will receive grades every six weeks. It is extremely important to monitor Canvas regularly for class updates. Create a weekly time management calendar to stay organized. Are you missing assignments? Unsatisfactory grades may be associated with the following: missed or incomplete assignments, lack of participation, poor attendance, and/or low test scores.

Credit Recovery at JL
Top of Page

There are times when a student needs to recover from a poor or failing grade. In these instances, the district has some alternative education options to offer a student wishing to complete their education at another site.

Summer School
Location: James Lick
Time Frame: Summer Vacation
Each year the counseling staff determines the courses which are needed for James Lick students.  Sign-ups take place in April and information is available on Canvas.

Cyberhigh
Location: James Lick
Time Frame: TBA; may be offered in Summer School.
Cyberhigh is an online program that offers both elective and college prep course work.  There is no cost for students and students can work on their classes at home in addition to the class which meets on T and TH.  We enroll students closest to graduation first and add to the rolls as space permits.

College Courses
Location: EVC, SJCC, Mission College
Time Frame: Summer Vacation
Students take classes at local community colleges following the college's enrollment procedures.  Each 3 credit class at the college is entered into the transcript as a 10 credit HS class. More information is available on the Enrichment Page.

Short-time Independent Study Program (ISP)
Location: Home
Time Frame: At least 5 days, no more than 15 days
There are times when a student can not be in attendance for a brief period of time.  If such a situation should arise, you can request Short - Term ISP.  Applications and available in the attendance office and are returned there for processing.  If approved, a James Lick teacher works with your family to gather and collect assignments during ST-ISP.
