-Coach Tommy Luu
As we begin the season shortly, I would like to say a few words. We as the James Lick Girls’ Basketball program are representatives of the school and its pillars. We also want to be a direct representation of the district, school, program, teammates, community, and more importantly, as individuals and your family. Our goal is to develop into strong, smart, and hard working Student-Athletes while we enjoy an outstanding season. We are excited to get the season started, as we will take part of a great season with our student-athletes!
My name is Tommy Luu, the Head Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach at James Lick High School. My coaching career has come across many levels. I was a Student Manager with the San Jose State Mens’ Basketball Program for 2 years. I spent those years learning from some of the best coaches in this area. I was in charge of film exchange, coordination of film, statistics, and skill development. That was by far one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career. Next, I spent 3 years as a Skill Development Trainer and Coach for Mike Allen Sports. We offered skill development training sessions to everyone from ages of 5 to 17. It was a great experience to be able to partake in. I was able to motivate and teach many Student-Athletes. I helped run our AAU program, Ballin’ Ambassadors and Lady Ambassadors, where I helped out and assisted all levels (12U, 14U, 15U, 17U) and head coached 11U Boys, 13U Boys, and 16U Girls. I was able to motivate athletes of all ages in the game of basketball and what it takes to be successful off the court as well. I spent one season as a Head Assistant Coach with the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Program at Gunderson High School. That was another great experience to be able to motivate and help lead the team to their 3rd straight CCS appearance. Lastly, I am proud to have the privilege to be given the opportunity to prepare for my 2nd season as the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at James Lick High School.
As mentioned before, I am currently in my 6th year of teaching at James Lick High School. I graduated from James Lick in 2006 and went on to study Spanish and minored in Mexican American Studies at San Jose State University. I graduated from SJSU in 2011 and immediately starting working on my teaching credential at SJSU, and at same time teaching at James Lick. I started coaching basketball for the 2014-2015 seasons as the JV coach. I my self represented James Lick as a student athlete in the sports of Basketball and Softball. With the season coming underway, I am excited and looking forward to a very promising season for our Student Athletes.
